Movie night tip: Fat Free Homemade Popcorn

fatfreehomemadepopcorn1

Friday nights are movie nights around here. We occasionally make popcorn, and we used to make it on stove top, with just a tiny bit of olive oil. That was the healthy way to make them.

But a few weeks ago I heard about popping the kernels with water. What? Water? Obviously I had to investigate. I browsed online – where else? – and found that the steam also pops the kernels. I tried it, it worked, and since then I’ve done it some times and changed the amounts to what I feel works best.

First things first, what you’ll need:

The proportions are 6 tablespoons of popcorn to 4 tablespoons of water. The bowl or dish that you use needs to be microwave safe, obviously. And you’ll also need 2 paper towels and a plate (not pictured).

Then, you’ll put one paper towel at the bottom of the bowl, add the popcorn and then the water. Place the other paper towel on top.

Place a plate on top of the bowl, making sure it’s not airtight, so the steam can escape. Put in the microwave. With my microwave, at the highest power – 800W – it takes 14 minutes to be completely ready, but you may need to adjust this according to your own. Don’t go too far, at least the first few times you do this and be aware, just like with other methods of popping corn, that it’s ready as soon as the pops slow to an almost stop.

Remember, you don’t need to add any kind of fat. No olive oil, no vegetable oil, no butter.

Be very careful while taking the dish out of the microwave, as it will be really hot. As the plate on top of it. The paper towels, specially the one at the bottom, will be slightly burned. It’s okay.

Just put them in the serving bowl, add salt or whatever seasoning you prefer, and there you have it! Perfect crispy popcorn, made in the healthiest way possible!

{Disclaimer: I didn’t find any extensive nutritional information on this method, but it can’t be that bad. The only thing that could be eventually harmful is that it’s microwave-made. But if you have a microwave, you’re probably not worried about that and if you already nuke the store-bought popcorn packages, this is definitely a better method}

We like to have a cup of tea while watching a movie, and tonight’s choice was Forest Fruits Black Tea by Lipton. Yummy!

There you have it! Simple, easy and healthy, just the way I like it! 😉 Have a great weekend and…
