Last Christmas my sister and brother in law gave me this cool cheesemaking kit. In Portugal we don’t have this, and I even didn’t imagine that this existed. I’m glad it does eheh.
I finally decided to try this out today. This comes with two main recipes, for mozzarella and ricotta, and I chose mozzarella. In the photos below, you can see the ingredients that the kit holds, the products I needed to make it and several photos of the process. The last photo was of our lunch: baked fish with spinach and mozzarella (already the homemade one) =)
First things first. I love kits like these. I like to make things at home, specially if they’re made as simple as this kit makes. Second: this is a kit developed for US users. We don’t get gallons of milk in the store; we get 4 liters and then subtract the amount necessary. Third: it’s not easy to find good quality pasteurized milk. At least not as easy as in the States.
With all this in mind, I was nervous and excited to see what could come out of this experience. I followed the steps and used the microwave heating method. It wasn’t easy. But I believe it had a lot to do with the pot and the milk I used. It took a while more to get to the point that the curd could be stretched and it didn’t stretch as much as it showed in the booklet.
Still, I made cheese!! And it’s good! Who knew? =) I used it right after making it and it was so cool using the mozzarella that I made! It may not the be the best looking cheese in the world, but it’s my cheese! eheheh
I highly recommend that you try these kits! They’re so cool! Go to www.cheesemaking.com and you’ll get all the info you need. =)
Next time: need to add salt, which I forgot. And I will try the ricotta, and will keep you posted on that 😉
