So, why am I writing about the ESTA? And what is the ESTA?
I’m writing today because I’m renewing mine for what I’m hoping it’s the last time. Because they’re valid for two years and I’m a believer that in two years my situation will be resolved and I’ll not be needing to renew it once again.
As you can see in this website, the US Customs and Border Protection website, the ESTA is “an automated system that determines the eligibility of visitors to travel to the US under the Visa Waiver Program”. And what is the Visa Waiver Program? Also on this website, but in another place, the “Visa Waiver Program (VWP) is administered by DHS and enables eligible citizens or nationals of designated countries to travel to the United States for tourism or business for stays of 90 days or less without first obtaining a visa”. Fortunately, Portugal has been on the list since the beginning of this program. This just means that you can visit the US for 90 days or less each time, without applying for a Visa.
Unfortunately, there’s been a lot of people from Portugal that take advantage of this and enter the US and never come back. That’s taking a toll in our eligibility for the VWP. Our Foreign Affairs Minister even had a meeting with Hillary Clinton to reassure her those numbers will go down. Or so I imagine that’s what he said. I hope he did.
Well, this was going to be a short post from the beginning, I really just wanted to share this with you. =)
