A few years ago, I saw on Oprah a woman claiming that she could make a healthy version of any kind of fast food. One of her tips for making fake fried food was to cook the meat in the oven but use a coating of corn flakes to mimic the crunchiness.
I’ve done this a few times with different types of meat (and even fish), but yesterday I did it with pork. Instead of just grilling them, I made my own version of fake fried fast food eheh
So, what will you need? First, you need to choose the type of meat/fish and the cut. Then, if you want, you can season the meat or even make a marinade and let it set for an hour or so. I marinated the steaks in a concoction made of lemon juice, salt, garlic powder, cayenne pepper, black pepper, paprika and a bit of white rum, and let it set for about an hour and a half in the fridge. But you can season it the way you prefer.
After that, prepare three plates. The first one with all purpose flour, the second with na egg (beaten and maybe seasoned – I used cayenne pepper) and the third with the corn flakes. The easiest way to crumble the corn flakes is to put the amount you’ll use in a bag and them mash them using a plate. The flakes will be in smaller pieces and you won’t have made any mess 😉
The coating process is really simple. Dip, dip, dip. Flour, egg, corn flakes. =) Put the steaks in the oven and let them cook for about 20-25 minutes or until golden. Don’t see it too hot or you’ll burn it before it’s cooked.
This is a really simple, healthy and tasty way of eating “fast food”. =)
