As you may now know, I’ve been baking bread at home for quite a while now. I’ve been using those packaged flours for bread machines but this time I wanted to try something different.
We don’t have buttermilk in Portugal, so when I saw this Cultured Buttermilk Blend packages for cooking and baking at the Liberty American Store, I knew I wanted to see if it was any good. Granted, I already knew it wouldn’t be exactly the same as “real” buttermilk, but I still wanted to try it.
I used one of the recipes that came with the bread machine.
Ingredients (put in the machine in this order):
– 1 1/4 cups of buttermilk (I used 1 package dissolved in 1 1/4 cups of water)
– 1 1/2 tablespoons of butter
– 1 teaspoon of salt
– 2 tablespoons of sugar
– 4 1/2 cups of all purpose flour
– 1 packet of dry yeast (about 11g)
Then all you need to do is turn the machine on the regular program – 3 to 3 and a half hours. And there you have it!
It was actually better than I thought it would be. It was really tasty and grew to the size I was expecting. It was a bit dry though. Next time I’m gonna add one tablespoon of vegetable oil and see what happens. =)
